CHEMISTRY

DEPARTMENT PROFILE

Department of Chemistry is established in 1935, is the largest science department in the prestigious Raja Lakhamagouda Science Institute, Belgaum to undertake teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate level where strong foundations are laid facilitating the teaching and learners the skills of analytical thinking, experimentation, and application of the knowledge gained to meet future challenges. The chemistry subject is most important among all other basic science streams. From year 1953 to 1958 PG courses were also conducted in chemistry department with affiliated to Karnatak University, Dharwad. Raja Lakhamagouda Science Institute is recognized as one of the premier science institute in the North Karnataka region rendering rigorous service to society.

Semester system is adopted for B.Sc course since 2006. The syllabus offered by the department at undergraduate level is aimed at providing the students with a strong foundation of the subject and making them proficient in all aspects both in theory and practical so that they are ready to take up higher studies in Chemistry in any reputed institution in the world. The department has been promoting undergraduate research through the term paper for the final year degree students. In order to inculcate research interest in the postgraduate students.

In the year 2018-19 PG course in Chemistry was Introduced. Over the years, the department has conducted several national and state-level seminars and workshops on frontier areas of chemistry for the benefit of the discerning students, faculty, and research scholars. The department boasts of vibrant UG and PG abuzz with co-curricular activities such as organizing and participating in lectures by eminent scientists, inter-collegiate chemistry festivals, educational trips, and science exhibitions.

All the staff members of the department are members of the Board of Studies in chemistry.  All the staff members completed Minor Research Project. Results in chemistry are always more than 90%. To imbibe skills, our department conducts study tour every year as a part of curriculum. Chemistry department is involved in consultancy of soil testing and water analysis in collaboration with Bio-Center, Belagavi, and offering NSQF based soft-skills and certification courses to UG students. Two endowment cash prize is contributed by the chemistry staff and one of the alumni to the students securing highest marks in chemistry subject at B.Sc-I and B.Sc-II.
