OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT
Physics department was established in the year 1935 as a part of Lingraj College. In 1944 the degree course in science was inaugurated by the Nobel Laureate Sir C.V.Raman. On the Recommendation of Karnatak University, Dharwad, the Government of Karnataka granted permission to our college to start post graduation course in Physics from the academic year 2010-11. Accordingly this facilitates the students from this part of North Karnataka to carry out post graduation in Physics. After the bifurcation of Karnatak University, in the year 2011-12, the affiliation was shifted to Rani Channamma University, Belagavi. Our institution is conferred with autonomous status in the academic year 2012-13 by UGC. Since then the PG Department is functioning with the status of autonomy.
Since its inception, the department thrives for the excellence in imparting knowledge of Physics. The department has well-established, spacious laboratories with competent and experienced teaching faculty.
Currently the department offers Solid State Physics as specialisation in M.Sc. Physics programme. The department facilitates students with periodic field visits, study tours to research institutes of national repute. Also conferences, seminars, workshops, guest lectures are organized periodically for the update of recent trends in Physics.
The department faculties are actively engaged in research activities and numerous research papers are published in journals of national and international repute. The students are also motivated towards research through their projects.

RESEARCH AREAS
Fabrication of Semiconductor devices and simulation studies, Reliability Studies in Semiconductors, Ion beam induced modifications, Defects in semiconductors, Condensed Matter Physics, High Tc Superconductors, Magnetic and Electrical Properties of Ferrite’s and Alloys, Mossbaur Spectroscopy, Gaint magnetic resistance, Nano materials, Coulomb excitation, Nuclear reaction and Nuclear Spectroscopy.
